New Delhi: Renowned socio-political activist Syed Irfan Hashmi today commended Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s proactive stance on regulating social media platforms to protect children and society from emerging digital threats.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Minister Vaishnaw revealed that the government is in advanced discussions with major platforms including Netflix, YouTube, Meta, and X to enforce age-based restrictions and robust content safeguards. He emphasized tackling the rising menace of deepfakes, underscoring that every company must strictly adhere to India’s legal framework and Constitutional values.
“Syed Irfan Hashmi welcomes this timely initiative as a vital step toward safeguarding our youth from harmful content and manipulative technologies,” said a statement from the activist. “Deepfakes erode trust in our democracy and expose vulnerable children to exploitation. Stronger regulations are not just needed—they are imperative to uphold societal harmony and national integrity.”
Hashmi urged swift implementation of these measures, calling on platforms to prioritize Indian laws over global agendas. “This is a moment for tech giants to align with our Constitutional ethos, ensuring a safer digital India for generations to come,” he added.
Hashmi, known for his advocacy on digital rights and social justice, has long campaigned for accountable online ecosystems. He expressed optimism that these discussions will yield concrete outcomes, fostering a balanced approach to innovation and protection.
